Addressing Educational Injustice with Innovative Technology
Transforming Education Through Innovation
In Gumbani Village, Limpopo, two young innovators are reshaping the future of learning. At just 25 and 22 years old, Malungelo Mathonsi and Khongelani Shibambu developed the NOVAR app, an educational platform that gives learners free access to exam papers, pre-recorded lessons, and motivational videos – without needing a data connection. With more than 50,000 downloads in just a few months, NOVAR is proving that digital learning solutions in South Africa can thrive even in under-resourced communities.
Born From Real Challenges
The idea for NOVAR came from Mathonsi and Shibambu’s personal struggles growing up with limited access to libraries and computers. Instead of accepting the gap, they designed a platform that directly tackles barriers to education. By integrating artificial intelligence into the app, they not only make studying easier but also introduce learners to emerging technologies that will shape future workplaces.
More Than Just an App: Building Community
Unlike many online education platforms, NOVAR is about more than content delivery. It fosters community development by encouraging learners to connect, support, and motivate each other. This approach makes education more social, accessible, and relevant to everyday challenges.
Backed by Investment and Mentorship
NOVAR has caught the attention of major institutions. Both Liberty and Standard Bank have invested R1 million in the platform, providing not just funding but also mentorship to help scale the project. The founders plan to grow their team by employing other young people, creating jobs while expanding the app’s reach.
A Wider Impact for African Education
The story of NOVAR is part of a bigger movement: African innovators developing local solutions for local challenges. By creating e-learning tools that work without data costs, Mathonsi and Shibambu show how technology can bridge inequality in education and equip young people with the skills they need for the future.
